AI-Powered Traffic Light System
R&D · Video processing research · R&D and Innovation

Overview
A real-time traffic control system that replaces fixed timers with video processing. A camera on each approach sends one frame per second to a Raspberry Pi, where Python and OpenCV count the vehicles in every lane. The congested direction gets the green light first, and its green time grows with the queue, cutting waiting time, fuel use and needless jams at junctions.
Scope of work
- Research, system design and literature review of 22 traffic control methods
- Image pipeline: background subtraction, enhancement, greyscale and HSV masks, binarization
- Vehicle counting with blob detection in OpenCV
- Decision logic that gives priority and longer green to the busier lane
- Working prototype: camera, Raspberry Pi, LED signals and countdown on screen
